Meet Jesse: Macropod Backend Dev

Jesse is one of the vital linchpins to our fabulously talented Developer team. Self attested man of few words, when Jesse adds to a discussion he adds a depth of understanding that make others shut-up and pay attention. Quietly calm, assertive and a lover of sleeping in, the office wouldn’t be the same without him.

Meet Jesse …

Jesse Macropod DeveloperWhat’s your short story?

I live in Melbourne. I like to tinker with computers, dig in my garden and hang out with my cats.

How long have you been in the biz?

I got a GeoCities account in 1996 and I’ve been web developing ever since. While it’s been a long term hobby, I only started professionally 5 years ago.

What is your role at Macropod?

I’m one of the Backend Rails devs although I do tend to spend most of my time writing Javascript. I often end up being responsible for things that straddle the client/server boundary.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I get to solve puzzles all day and constantly learn new things.

Anything you dislike about being a dev?

So many of those puzzles are self inflicted. Learning new things always makes ‘Past Jesse’ seem quite foolish.

Why did you want to work at Macropod?

My best buddy said it was a great place to work with great people. I wasn’t disappointed.

Grand plans for your future?

To keep doing what I’m doing, learning new things and finding new puzzles to solve.

What is your favourite industry site to surf?

Twitter. I find people that know things I’m interested in and follow them.

It’s amazing how much you can learn by just reading about the problems other people have.

If you weren’t doing this job what would you be doing?

I’d find something else that would give me the opportunity to solve puzzles.

What are you famous for?

I’m famous for being of few words.

You can connect with Jesse on twitter @jessemcnelis or check out his work on Github, I wonder if he has a gardening repo?
